From Epicurus to Sam Cooke, the Daily News to Roots, Digest draws from the present and the past to form an intellectual, American identity. In poems that forge their own styles and strategies, we experience dialogues between the written word and other art forms. Within this dialogue we hear Ben Jonson, we meet police K-9s, and we find children negotiating a sense of the world through a father’s eyes and through their own.

Review
“…a thrilling, brilliant, and deeply moving ride.” —Nick Flynn
“[T]hese poems are a showcase for Pardlo’s ample and agile mind, his courageous social conscience, and his mighty voice.”—Tracy K. Smith
"I read Digest. And was knocked out. The poems contain multitudes: Brooklyn, fatherhood, academia, music. They sizzle (“I was reborn at the crime scene”). They bite (“Nothing holds a family together like irony and a grudge”). Sometimes they make you laugh out loud (“I finally friended my brother”).”—Head Butler

Handful of great poems in here
By Ethan Mackey
Handful of great poems in here. Half are good. The rest? Just okay. I'm tired of reading Pulitzer and "American's Best" poets--I feel like so many poets nowadays are writing in a vacuum. Writing for academia. Writing for other poets. Too many riddles. Too many self-referential or autobiographical musings that make it near impossible for the reader to uncover the argument behind each poem.
This collection of poetry is no exception. Pardlo is a masterful poet at the granular level. His words have a strong sense of musicality and of newness. But he plays to this strength too much, it turns into a vice--by the end of a poem I feel so barraged by four-syllable words and strange syntax, I have no desire to return to decipher what is happening behind the text. Beyond that, there are plenty of moments in his stream-of-conscious writing where I completely lose the momentum of the opening and title of the poem.
There are some absolute gems in here though. I especially love the African-American father perspective so delicately interwoven throughout the collection. His story telling and subsequent social commentary are absolutely on the mark. The shining moments are what save the value of the collection for me. Would I buy this book had I known exactly the content of it? I believe so--mainly for the 8-10 great poems in here.

Unexpectedly good
By C. D. Varn
Pardlo's diversity of reference is actually a little dizzying for such a popular volume of poetry: yet the line this book walks between narrative and personal lyric keeps this volume grounded in an unexpected way. Pardlo's vision of Brooklyn and his own biography ground this book that slips in and out of complicated American identity. Like Claudia Rankine's Citizen, which is thematically more direct and angry but less autobiographical, this book interrogates Americanness, Otherness, and blackness in ways that can make one feel both comforted and uncomfortable at once. The insight in Digest is that it is allows for digesting of all those layer complications: interplays between history and pop culture, personal and persona, political and polis, etc, are allowed a space to brew in Pardlo's verse.
This is one of my favorite Pulitzer Prize winning books of poetry, and one that I was not entirely expecting.
