While the discovery of La Escalera unleashed a reign of terror by the Spanish colonial powers in which hundreds of enslaved people were tortured, tried, and executed, Finch revises historiographical conceptions of the movement as a fiction conveniently invented by the Spanish government in order to target anticolonial activities. Connecting the political agitation stirred up by free people of color in the urban centers to the slave rebellions that rocked the countryside, Finch shows how the rural plantation was connected to a much larger conspiratorial world outside the agrarian sector. While acknowledging the role of foreign abolitionists and white creoles in the broader history of emancipation, Finch teases apart the organization, leadership, and effectiveness of the black insurgents in midcentury dissident mobilizations that emerged across western Cuba, presenting compelling evidence that black women played a particularly critical role.

Throughout, central theoretical concepts are developed from first principles. To aid the less statistically sophisticated reader, several chapters and appendices focus on the basic statistical tools needed to digest the book. Wherever possible, theoretical and analytical concepts are illustrated with empirical examples from diverse settings. Three major features of Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits distinguish it from earlier work. First, it reflects the explosive influx over the past few years of quantitative-genetic thinking into evolutionary biology. Second, in animal breeding, enormous strides have been made in the development of new techniques for estimating breeding values (for the purposes of identifying elite individuals in selection programs) and for estimating variance components from samples of complex pedigrees. Lacks exercises

This is overall a decent treatment of what its title claims it to be. The main flaw, as I see it, is the lack of exercises. The material is fairly heavy on mathematics and statistics and I find it hard to internalize a lot of the mathematical machinery without going through the calculations myself.

Apart from this lack of exercises I like the book. It is a bit too long (and far too heavy!), and it contains more historical background than what I need, but it gives a very thorough overview of the theory of the field, which is what is most important in the end. The great amount of text makes it more useful as a book to learn from than as a reference, but since there isn't anything else out there I suppose we are stuck with this for reference as well.

Comprehensive in scope

I read this book with the expectation that it would give me an idea of the extent to which organism traits or phenotypes are determined optimally. Discussions on evolution frequently regard the functioning and attributes of an organism as being optimal at the particular time in its evolutionary history. A successful theory of evolution as a theory of mathematical optimization would entail a thorough understanding of the evidence for this hypothesis of optimality of phenotypes.
Another interesting question as to what effect a certain mixing of genetic factors, each one of these factors determining a phenotype separately (and optimally), would determine an optimal phenotype. An answer to this question would be important from the standpoint of transgenic strategies.
But this book is not about optimization theory in genetics, but one that introduces the reader to an analysis, in the authors view, of how evolution happens, and not a predictive tool of what ought to evolve. And, as the authors correctly point out, the time scales needed to evolve an optimal phenotype are not usually dealt with in discussion on optimization strategies. The authors also argue that optimization theories do not consider the expected phenotypic variance or the influence of random drift or mutation. Quantitative genetics does this, they state, and they define it as a mechanistic theory of the evolutionary process.
What is also interesting about quantitative genetics is that it was responsible directly or indirectly for a large body of statistical theory, many of these results being standard material in modern classes in statistics. It is also beginning to find an intersection with the theory of molecular genetics. The authors remark that eventually both quantitative and molecular genetics will have to answer to each other, and they give a taste of this in the chapter on marked-based analysis and QTLs.
There is no question that the reading of this book will give the reader a comprehensive overview of quantitative genetics. But, it takes an very long time to get through, and there are no exercises to test the understanding. Readers will need a fair knowledge of statistics to read the book, but there are three chapters and appendices in the back of the book outlining some of the necessary statistical concepts. The level of mathematics is the most sophisticated in the last chapter, which uses techniques such as maximum likelihood, expectation maximization, and restricted maximum likelihood. Readers with a background in bioinformatics will be very familiar with these techniques. Newton-Rhapson methods and Fisher's scoring method are discusses as derivative-based methods for solving the ML/REML equations and compared with the EM methods for doing the same. The authors are very convincing in informing the reader of the difficulty in estimating genetic variance components in real populations. Also, and most importantly, there are myriads or real-world examples given to illustrate the theory.
For molecular geneticists, and for those very curious about the connection between molecular biology and quantitative genetics, chapter 14, covering the principles of marker-based analysis, would probably be the most interesting in the book. The treatment is both historical, discussing the effects of entire chromosomes, and modern, discussing topics such as using markers or the construction of nearly isogenic lines and cloning individual QTLs. In the 'classical' approach to marker-based methods the authors discuss chromosomal assays, wherein a chromosome from one line is substituted into a standard genetic background chosen to have minimum variance. Since a chromosomal segment may contain a large position of the total genome, the authors take what could be called a 'coarse-grained' approach that utilizes genetic factors rather than a 'microscopic' one emphasizing individual genes. Such a strategy requires large sample sizes if one is to detect factors that result in extremely small effects. Examples of this approach are given, and the authors discuss its weaknesses, one being that a large chromosomal section can have QTLs that have effects in opposite directions, resulting in a net effect close to zero. Thoday's method is also discussed in order to point out the limitations of using flanking-marker mapping methods. The genetics of Drosophila bristle number is also briefly treated, but many references are given.
Recoginizing that direct sequencing of DNA gives a measure of genetic variation, the authors point out though that restriction fragment length polymorphisms are suitable for most purposes, assuming that these are detectable. The advantages and disadvantages of other techniques, such as randomly amplified polymorphic DNAs, are also discussed. The arithmetic involved in genetic mapping is treated in fair detail, the authors overviewing what is involved mathematically in map distances, recombination frequencies, and in the estimation of how many randomly distributed markers are needed to gaurantee that a portion of the genome is within a given number of map units of a marker. The strategies for mapping and cloning of QTLs are the main emphasis in the rest of the chapter. Some of the more interesting discussions here include: 1. The phenomena of 'linkage drag', wherein linked undesirable geness can be dragged along with the marker; 2. Candidate loci and their use in the study of genetic disorders. The authors outline in great detail the problems with this approach, such as linkage disequilibrium; 3. Gene cloning and its use in the study of QTLs. The authors discuss two different cloning strategies, namely that of transposon tagging and positional cloning. The authors emphasize the need for inbred lines for the detection of QTLs by transposon tagging to reduce variance from segregation at other loci. Because of this need, they seem skeptical of the general use of this technique, but give a brief argument as to its possible success using homologies in sequence data between species. The authors also emphasize the complexity involved in the use of positional cloning and comparative mapping and then outline an algorithm as to how to use NILs to do positional cloning of a QTL.

Great book for anyone interested in genetics: a classic.

Great book! Clear explanations and good examples. What makes it a really interesting book is that it explains both animal breeding, plant breeding and natural selection in ecological context. So this book has a very broad angle of subjects, but greatly focussed on the common factor: genetical quantitative traits and how to analyse them. The mathematical level might be slightly difficult for not so mathematic orientated people, but most is very well explained and some (parts of) chapters might actually not be misplaced in a mathematics teaching book as well. I have been waiting for such a book and expect it to become a classic. I highly recommend this book!

The eighth book in the Rich Dad series reveals the financial wisdom of the rich, which is neither taught in schools nor discussed in the popular financial press. The authors begin with an example of the Zen master-student relationship that Kiyosaki had with his Rich Dad mentor. Kiyosaki had made the mistake of many inexperienced investors and bought into a mutual fund he knew nothing about; his Rich Dad let him stay with the bad investment for months to learn the lesson of patience. Kiyosaki also learned that the common advice to "invest for the long term, buy, hold and diversify" is not really advice but actually a sales pitch, and it teaches very little about how to become a smart investor. The reason most people continue to choose mutual-fund investing is because it is so easy, and that is also why it is inherently risky. Kiyosaki and his coauthor emphasize investing in asset classes other than equities, such as a business venture, real estate, and paper assets like hedge funds and options. These approaches require more thought, education, and effort than does simply handing one's money over to a financial company and allowing a stranger to control it, but the risks are lower and the potential financial rewards can be much greater. Solid Entry in the "Rich Dad" Series

People either love Kiyosaki or think he's a charlatan. This isn't his best book but its a solid addition to the series. I'd rank 3rd below "Rich dad, Poor Dad" and "Cashflow Quadrant". More than in any other of his books he gets into HOW to get rich. But this isn't the best part of the book. The best part is the first part which explains why 401Ks can be lousy investments.

I started contributing to a a tax defered annuity seven years ago. I noticed that seven years late there is LESS money in it than I contributed to it. Ditto for my pension fund. Kiyosaki goes over the reasons 401Ks and similar defered accounts may not be good investments:

1) They aren't guaranteed.

2) a 5% or 10% return is actually pretty lousy.

3) 401Ks are TAX DEFERED, which means you actually pay MORE taxes when you retire, assuming you made money.

4) The standard lines about the stock market going up an average of (insert %) per year is a sales pitch. Some companies go out of business and the Dow can flatline for a decade or more.

Kiysaki then explains a phenomenon which even his detractors have to admit is true: people tend to think 401Ks and mutual funds are SAFER investments than business and real estate. Try going to your bank and asking for a 100k loan to buy a piece of income-producing real estate. If you have good credit the answer will likely be "yes". Now try borrowing 100k to buy a mutal fund. The bank's answer will be laughter. That's because mutual funds are DANGEROUS!

Kiysaki's answer is to start your own business, use the proceeds to invest in income producing real estate and invest the cash flow into paper and other assets. This is the same as what Warren Buffet does. It's not easy but in the long run its safer and potentially more profitable.

Now, I wouldn't recommend anyone to stop contributing to a 401K. Especially novice investors in their early 20s. But for people who already own their own business or a piece of income producing real estate, this book gives you a lot more options.

Another fascinating thing he points out that's true: workers stealing money from themselves. I've been reading the financial pages for this week (June 6, 2005) and read the news that GM will lay off 25,000 workers. The stock, of course, jumped up in anticipation of higher earnings. A large number of those workers probably have some of their 401K money invested in GM. So their retirement money will be determined by the stock going up, BUT THAT NECCESSITATES FIRING WORKERS! Who took their money? THEY TOOK THEIR OWN MONEY! That's a problem with profit sharing I haven't heard anyone but Kiyosaki articulate. But if you think about it, it's probably true.

Lastly, even some of positive reviews for this book say that Kiysaki advocates purchasing real estate. This isn't entirely accurate. He advocates starting a part time business and trying to grow it and THEN investing cash flow into INCOME PRODUCING real estate. The current real estate mania is being fueled by speculators who are trying to "flip" properties. That's not investing! And Kiysaki doesn't condone it. He's talking about buying houses than can be rented and will produce a few hundred dollars cash flow above and beyond their expenses. He warns not to bank on appreciation. That's just an added bonus.

So read this book with an open mind. Although the prose style is simple, it can make (or save) you a lot of money. It did for me.

WOW! I though he was losing his touch, based on....

...his last three books, BUT this was on the "money". "Who Took My Money" is Kiyosaki's best book by far since "Retire Young, Retire Rich". His last three books were good, but not like the top tier Rich Dad Books in my opinion (Rich Dad, Poor Dad; Cashflow Quadrant; Guide to Investing; Retire Young, Retire Rich and now Who Took My Money).

I was starting to get soooo bored with his material, based on his last few books(Prophecy had a good subject, but I was going to sleep; Success Stories had too many real estate stories, but needed other business stories without real estate, and an options success story would have been nice too. I was happy for the individuals in the book, but wanted more; Guide to Becoming Rich was a great overview of the Rich Dad principles, but let's be honest people, it was a bit redundant), I went to the library first to check this book out, that way if it was disappointing, I would not have to slam it in a review. I like this book so much, that after I returned it to the library I decided to purchase my own copy for reference.

The good thing is I was already moving in the right direction in terms of accelerating my money. This book clarifies that I am doing the right thing. It also reinforces what Kiyosaki has said for a long time: DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU! There are some Rich Dad followers (idiots in my opinion) who think everybody who reads the Rich Dad books, should immediately go into real estate, and that is not right. These individuals do not respect their fellow Rich Dad readers dreams, because they think they know everything. If someone wants to go into real estate good for them, but for me at this time, I am concentrating on creating my own businesses (other than real estate), options trading and intellectual property. I plan on investing in real estate in a few years. This is definitely a book people should check out and read, but read the first three Rich Dad books and "Retire Young, Retire Rich" first, before you read this one, you will be glad you did! For the simple fact it will prepare your mindset to accelerate your money!!!

Now, this is more like it.

Finally, Robert Kiyosaki gets around and communicate somewhat clearly and concretely, ways to attain financial success. The writing here is still awkward and repetitive, but at least, there's Sharon Lechter to summarize his points in a clear and straightforward manner. You'll get around understanding what Kiyosaki says by the end of each chapter.

Questions on his credibility aside, this book is much more helpful than most of his previous books, which tend to be redundant and circuitious. It shows how you can accelerate your finances by using good debt, leveraging it to other assets so you can create income pipelines. Although some people say his methods are very risky (which being a sole income provider, I wholeheartedly agree), the book opened my mind on methods possible to attain wealth. I may temper Kiyosaki's approach but his book has truly made me aware of the possibilities of attaining a secure and prosperous tomorrow without waiting too long.

Now, if only he allows the editor to improve his writing...

Was My college textbook way back when...

This is the ISBN for my college Spanish II textbook. ISBNs are tricky things. Sometimes they change them when they issue an updated edition and sometimes they don't. This ISBN: 0030233283 I think Amazon might have posted the same reviews for the updated and older versions of this book since all the other reviews refer to a CD-rom version. So, please contact the seller before ordering to make sure you are getting what you want. The book in front of me is a hard cover book. It is your average College Spanish Level II textbook. There isn't anything that makes it particularly different, except that this edition was published in 1990 so it is an older book. It isn't especially engaging. It's pretty dry. I assume that the newer editions probably have better pictures and illustrations and likely different formatting for the lessons and text.

I just wanted to comment on the previous reviews. I have used this book and the supplementary CD-Rom. The book is fine. It is a printed book. The CD-Rom just comes with the book. It does have the same ISBN# because it comes packaged with the book. I think I made my point. There is a real book.

Not only was this book pretty beat up when it arrived, but only one of the two CDs it was supposed to have were actually in it. The description said the CDs were both there and unopened. That wasn't true at all. Needless to say, i already ordered another one from a different dealer and sent this one back. I wouldn't suggest buying this, as you cannot trust the description given.

The SAP Market needed a book like this. The basics, well covered. There is something in there for anyone.

While there are several books out there that cover specific topics in SAP (ABAP, BI, FI/CO, etc), there was always a need of a book that covers well the basic. Most clients I know either build themselves a "SAP Navigation" course (what is very expensive to do and may not end up super well) or try to give this content in the context of a business course (before starting a business process course, navigation would be covered). The problem with this approach is twofold:
Cost - Time of specialized trainers are spent on generic navigation training. - Often, as it is included in many courses, attendees may repeat it several times, wasting time
Quality - With this approach, the delivery is often "basic navigation to be able to follow the course". So a lot is simply not covered at all.

This book covers the basics, but covers them all. Even for me, a senior SAP consultant with almost 20 yrs of experience, I can say I learned a thing or 2. We often overlook new features. This book covers them all and I strongly recommend it as away for anyone to get familiar with SAP.
If all users had access to this kind of information prior involvement with SAP, I am sure errors would be avoided and above all, user satisfaction would increase.
This is also a valid reading for seasonal consultants. Just go directly to the sections you want to focus on.

For our next SAP deal, I will recommend to this client the purchase of a few copies and make it circulate within the SAP team.

There is FOR SURE, something for everyone to take away from this book.

Praise for the Ultimate SAP User Guide - a Must-Have Book for ANY SAP ERP User

I have used SAP for a very long time and this is a must-have book. If you are a beginner I highly recommend it, but even for long-time users of SAP you will learn a lot. I learned about the hold/set data feature; this will improve productivity greatly with SAP. I also experienced trouble navigating the Object Manager; this book reviews that.

The Clipboard feature is a must-know for any SAP user. I have used the ALV for years for reporting; but I didn't know about the Freeze Column feature. The book reviews how to use the SAP InfoSet Query - while SAP is no longer investing in this, it is still great for ad hoc reporting and can be used as a datasource to many SAP BI tools.

The book uses the FLIGHT demo model which is available on any ERP system. I like too that the book reviews SAP Workplace, a common area where many SAP Workflows and approvals reside.

There are printing tips, sending the spool to PDF and much much more. I highly recommend this book if you are a new SAP user or even a long time SAP user such as myself. Go get this book today!

This book is a great way to help your customers/users hit the ground running

This book is a great way to help your customers/users hit the ground running. I've spent 19 years using SAP, and still I found it helpful to review!
Yes, there are newer user interfaces - but some hard-core SAP users (knowledge workers) will still need to be able to navigate through the system. And there are many topics covered, not just the UI. My personal favorite is Chapter 11.
I bought two copies - one for home, and one for work. My teammates are also very interested in it.

Pieter Jan Kuijper, Professor of the Law of International Organizations, University of Amsterdam,Jan Wouters, Jean Monnet Chair EU and Global Governance, University of Leuven,Frank Hoffmeister, Head of Unit at DG Trade of the European Commission and Professor of Law at the Free University of Brussels, ,Geert De Baere, Assistant Professor of International Law and EU Law, Institute for European Law and Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, University of Leuven,Thomas Ramopoulos, European Commission; Research Fellow, Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies,

Pieter Jan Kuijper returned in September 2007 to the University of Amsterdam as Professor of the Law of International Organizations after more than twenty years in the service of the European Commission, latterly as Principal Legal Advisor and Director of the External Relations and Trade Law team of the Commission Legal Service. He has also been director of the Legal Affairs Division of the WTO Secretariat (1999-2002). During his years as practitioner of international law he has continued to teach, inter alia at the University of Amsterdam and at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles. His publications have concentrated on Community law, WTO law, and general international law and the relationship between them. He is a member of several professional societies and of the Board of Editors and Advisory Board of different international and Community law reviews.


Jan Wouters is Professor of International Law and International Organizations, Jean Monnet Chair Ad Personam EU and Global Governance, and founding Director of the Institute for International Law and of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, an interdisciplinary centre of excellence, at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven). As Visiting Professor at Sciences Po (Paris), Luiss University (Rome), and the College of Europe (Bruges) he teaches EU external relations law. He is a Member of the Royal Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts, is President of the United Nations Association Flanders Belgium, and practises law as Of Counsel at Linklaters, Brussels. He is Editor of the International Encyclopedia of Intergovernmental Organizations, Deputy Director of the Revue Belge de Droit International and an editorial board member in ten international journals.

Frank Hoffmeister studied law in Frankfurt, Geneva and Heidelberg (1989-1994) and received a PhD. at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign Public Law and International Law (1998). Between 1998 and 2001 he researched and taught as University Assistant at the Walter Hallstein-Institute for European Constitutional Law at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. He then entered the European Commission, first as Cyprus desk at DG Enlargement and afterwards as a member of the Legal Service, where he specialised on international law and WTO issues. In 2010, he became the Deputy Head of Cabinet of EU Trade Commissioner De Gucht, and as of 2010 he is Head of Unit dealing with anti-dumping at DG Trade. Besides, Frank teaches international economic law at the Free University University of Brussels and has published numerous articles on European and international law topics.

Geert De Baere is Associate Professor of International Law and EU Law at the Institute for European Law and the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies at the University of Leuven. He studied law at the University of Antwerp (Cand. Iuris, 1999 and Lic. Iuris, 2002) and at King's College, Cambridge (LL.M, 2003 and PhD, 2007). In 2005, he was a visiting research fellow at Columbia Law School's European Legal Studies Center, New York City. From 2007 to 2009, he worked as a referendaire in the chambers of Advocate General Sharpston at the Court of Justice of the EU, while being a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Antwerp.


Thomas Ramopoulos works as an official at the European Commission. He studied law (Hons) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and further completed a Master of Philosophy in International Relations at the University of Cambridge. He has been a researcher at the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies of the University of Leuven since 2011.
