I wonder if an editor actually went through the book.
By M. Bennett
As a student, having spent two semesters with this book I can say it is really bad. The first semester was more of an exercise of how to read this book, e.g. it jumps around, the variables are littered throughout the written text (good luck finding them) and examples often refer to other examples and you'll spend a lot of time just jumping to and from the question to the other questions to the example they are based on. This book lacks clarity, focus and in an effort to give explanations, it leaves you in a overly verbose explanation for the math that would, should only cover a page.

From Library Journal
Following A Child Called It (Health Communications, 1995), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and appears frequently on high school reading lists, this is the second in a planned trilogy from motivational author and speaker Pelzer. Here he tells his story from the time he left his abusive mother and alcoholic father, through his experiences in five foster homes and juvenile detention, and how he eventually made it into the Air Force. He was a defiant, rebellious boy who, despite his background and personality, managed to endear himself to many guardians, social workers, and teachers. Pelzer writes in an honest, sometimes rambling, style; he is never bitter, and his story will find many sympathetic readers. However, he leaves many questions unanswered (which may appear in the third book), dealing with his adult-life relationships, his son, the mother of that child, and the ways he turned his life around. This is sure to be popular among students and readers who await a sequel to A Child Called It. Well recommended.?Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, Pa.

From Chapter One

Winter 1970, Daly City, California―I'm alone. I'm hungry and I'm shivering in the dark! I sit on top of my hands at the bottom of the stairs in the garage. My head is tilted backward. My hands became numb hours ago. My neck and shoulder muscles begin to throb. But that's nothing new―l've learned to turn off the pain.

I'm Mother's prisoner.

I am nine years old and I've been living like this for years. Every day it's the same thing. I wake up from sleeping on an old army cot in the garage, perform the morning chores, and if I'm lucky, eat leftover breakfast cereal from my brothers. I run to school, steal food, return to "The House" and am forced to throw up in the toilet bowl to prove that I didn't commit the crime of stealing any food.

I receive beatings or play another one of her "games," perform afternoon chores, then sit at the bottom of the stairs until I'm summoned to complete the evening chores. Then, and only if I have completed all of my chores on time, and if I have not committed any "crimes," I may be fed a morsel of food.

My day ends only when Mother allows me to sleep on the army cot, where my body curls up in my meek effort to retain any body heat. The only pleasure in my life is when I sleep. That's the only time I can escape my life. I love to dream.

Weekends are worse. No school means no food and more time at "The House." All I can do is try to imagine myself away ―somewhere, anywhere ― from "The House." For years I have been the outcast of "The Family." As long as I can remember I have always been in trouble and have "deserved" to be punished. At first I thought I was a bad boy. Then I thought Mother was sick because she only acted differently when my brothers were not around and my father was away at work. But somehow I always knew Mother and I had a private relationship. I also realized that for some reason I have been Mother's sole target for her unexplained rage and twisted pleasure.

I have no home. I am a member of no one's family. I know deep inside that I do not now, nor will I ever deserve any love, attention or even recognition as a human being. I am a child called "It."

I'm all alone inside.

Upstairs the battle begins. Since it's after four in the afternoon, I knnow both of my parents are drunk. The yelling starts. First the name-calling, then the swearing. I count the seconds before the subject turns to me―it always does. The sound of Mother's voice makes my insides turn. "What do you mean?" she shrieks at my father, Stephen. "You think I treat æThe Boy' bad? Do you?" Her voice then turns ice cold. I can imagine her pointing a finger at my father's face. "You ... listen ... to ... me. You ... have no idea what æIt's' like. If you think I treat æIt' that bad ... then ... æIt' can live somewhere else.

I can picture my father―who, after all these years, still tries somewhat to stand up for me ―swirling the liquor in his glass, making the ice from his drink rattle. "Now calm down," he begins. "All I'm trying to say is... wellà no child deserves to live like that. My God Roerva, you treat ... dogs better than ... than you do The Boy."

The argument builds to an ear-shattering climax. Mother slams her drink on the kitchen countertop.

Father has crossed the line. No one ever tells Mother what to do. I know I will have to pay the price for her rage. I realize it's only a matter of time before she orders me upstairs. I prepare myself. Ever so slowly I slide my hands out from under my butt, but not toofar―for I know sometimes she'll check on me. I know I am never to move a muscle without her permission.

I feel so small inside. I only wish I could somehow ...

Without warning, Mother opens the door leading to the downstairs garage. "You!" she screams. "Get your ass up here! Now!"

In a flash I bolt up the stairs. I wait a moment for her command before I timidly open the door. Without a sound I approach Mother and await one of her "games."

It's the game of address, in which I have to stand exactly three feet in front of her, my hands glued to my side, my head tilted down at a 45 degree angle and my eyes locked onto her feet. Upon the first command I must look above her bust, but below her eyes. Upon the second command I must look into her eyes, but never, never may I speak: breathe or move a single muscle unless Mother gives me permission to do so. Mother and I have been playing this game since I was seven years old, so today it's just another routine in my lifeless existence.

Suddenly Mother reaches over and seizes my right ear. By accident, I flinch. With her free hand Mother punishes my movement with a solid slap to my face. Her hand becomes a blur, right up until the moment before it strikes my face. I cannot see very well without my glasses. Since it is not a school day, I am not allowed to wear them. The blow from her hand burns my skin. "Who told you to move?" Mother sneers. I keep my eyes open, fixing them on a spot on the carpet. Mother checks for my reaction before again yanking my ear as she leads me to the front door.

"Turn around!" she yells. "Look at me!" But I cheat. From the corner of my eye I steal a glance at Father. He gulps down another swallow from his drink. His once rigid shoulders are now slumped over. His job as a fireman in San Francisco, his years of drinking and the strained relationship with Mother have taken their toll on him. Once my superhero and known for his courageous efforts in rescuing children from burning buildings, Father is now a beaten man. He takes another swallow before Mother begins. "Your father here thinks I treat you bad. Well, do I? DO I?"

My lips tremble. For a second I'm unsure whether I am supposed to answer Mother must know this and probably enjoys "the game" all the more. Either way, I'm doomed. I feel like an insect about to be squashed. My dry mouth opens. I can feel a film of paste separate from my lips. I begin to stutter.

Before I can form a word, Mother again yanks on my right ear. My ear feels as if it were on fire. "Shut that mouth of yours! No one told you to talk! Did they? Well, did they?" Mother bellows.

My eyes seek out Father. Seconds later he must have felt my need. "Roerva," he says, "that's no way to treat The Boy."

Again I tense my body and again Mother yanks on my ear, but this time she maintains the pressure, forcing me to stand on my toes. Mother's face turns dark red. "So you think I treat him badly? I . . ." Pointing her index finger at her chest, Mother continues. "I don't need this. Stephen, if you think I'm treating It badly ... well, It can just get out of my house!"

I strain my legs, trying to stand a little taller; and begin to tighten my upper body so that when Mother strikes I can be ready. Suddenly she lets go of my ear and opens the front door. "Get out!" she screeches. "Get out of my house! I don't like you! I don't want you! I never loved you! Get the hell out of my house!"

I freeze. I'm not sure of this game. My brain begins to spin with all the options of what Mother's real intentions may be. To survive, I have to think ahead. Father steps in front of me. "No!" he cries out. "That's enough. Stop it, Roerva. Stop the whole thing. Just let The Boy be."

Mother now steps between Father and me. "No?"

Mother begins in a sarcastic voice. "How many times have you told me that about The Boy? The Boy this, The Boy that. The Boy, The Boy, The Boy. How many times, Stephen?" She reaches out, touching Father's arm as if pleading with him; as if their lives would be so much better if I no longer lived with them―if I no longer existed.

Inside my head my brain screams, Oh my God! Now I know!

Without thinking Father cuts her off "No," he states in a low voice. "This," he says, spreading his hands, "this is wrong." I can tell by his trailing voice that Father has lost his steam. He appears to be on the verge of tears. He looks at me and shakes his head before looking at Mother. "Where will he live? Who's going to take care of ... ?"

"Stephen, don't you get it? Don't you understand? I don æt give a damn what happens to him. I don æt give a damn about The Boy.

Suddenly, the front door flies open. Mother smiles as she holds the doorknob. "Okay. All right. I'll leave it up to The Boy." She bends down, just inches in front of my face. Mother's breath reeks of booze. Her eyes are ice cold and full of pure hatred. I wish I could turn away. I wish I were back in the garage. In a slow, raspy voice, Mother says, "lf you think I treat you so badly, you can leave."

I snap out of my protective mold and takke a chance by looking at Father. He misses my glance as he sips another drink. My mind begins to tumble. I don't understand the purpose of her new game. Suddenly I realize that this is no game. It takes a few seconds for me to understand that this is my chance―my chance to escape. I've wanted to run away for years, but some invisible fear kept me from doing it. But I tell myself that this is too easy. I so badly want to move my legs, but they remain rigid.

"Well?" Mother screams into my ear "it's your choice." Time seems to stand still. As I stare down at the carpet, I can hear Mother begin to hiss. "He won't leave. The Boy will never leave. It hasnæt the guts to go.

I can feel the inside of my body begin to shake. For a moment I close my eyes, wishing myself away. In my mind I can see myself walking through the door. I smile inside. I so badly want to leave. The more I envision myself walking through the door, the more I begin to feel a warmth spread through my soul. Suddenly, I can feel my body moving. My eyes pop open. I look down at my worn-out sneakers. My feet are stepping through the front door. Oh my God, I say to myself, I can't believe I'm doing this! Out of fear, I dare not stop.

"There," Mother triumphantly states. "The Boy did it. It's his decision. I didn't force him. Remember that, Stephen. I want you to know I didn't force him.

I step through the front door, knowing full well that Mother will reach out and yank me back in. I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I quicken my pace. After stepping past the door, I turn right and walk down the red steps. From behind me I can hear the sounds of Mother and Father straining themselves as they lean outside. "Roerva," Father says in a low voice "this is wrong."

"No!" she replies in a flat voice. "And remember, it was his decision. Besides, he'll be back."

These two books should be must reads for teenagers who think they have it rough!
By Karen L. Anderson
Great follow up to the first book, "A Boy Named It", which was a book my son had to read for school. I can't fathom was causes people to treat children this way, but Dave Pelzer writes his story. It was nice to find out how he made it through and became such a good man. I couldn't put either book down!

Although it's not a fun read because of the subject matter
By Sally D.
This book is a follow up to Pelzer's first book. Although it's not a fun read because of the subject matter, I found it extremely worthwhile. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a greater understanding on the effect of an abusive home on a child and how the experiences they have there don't necessarily cease when they're moved to another location.

Inspiring tale of survival against all odds
By R. Taylor
"The Lost Boy" is author Dave Pelzer's sequel to his incredible story "A Child Called IT". I found his writing to be heartfelt without being self-pitying. I was moved to tears on many occasions by his triumphant spirit in the face of horrific odds. This sequel focuses on his life from the age of 12-18 and his search for a family in the foster care system. Like his first book, it is written in the style of how a child at a particular age would speak which brings the reader more into "his world". Although you could pick up this book on it's own and be totally engrossed (he does a good job of inserting bits of back story from his younger years), I recommend reading his first installment A Child Called It to understand the full impact of his incredible story of survival and ultimate triumph. Although quite difficult to read at times simply from the horrors he endured, it was such an inspiring story, it was worth any discomfort on my part. He went through hell and survived to write about it and maintained the strength to go on to inspire and encourage others. Along with Jaycee Lee Dugard, author of A Stolen Life: A Memoir, Mr. Pelzer is one of my personal heroes...

Alkaline Water Antioxidant?
By Atlandea
Dr Parker does a great job of dispelling the myths surrounding alkaline water. This is a very easy read and will explain what alkaline water can do, is and isn't. The fact that anybody can own an appliance that can infuse molecular hydrogen into water isn't well understood in our culture. But, in time, this will become accepted and every kitchen will have one, just like microwaves, refers, dishwashers, and stoves.

Erwin Schrödinger: The man and his vision
By Rama Rao
This is another great work of Erwin Schrodinger which gives an insight into the biology of life from a physicist's perspective that inspired scientists like; Francis Crick who discovered the structure of DNA, J.B.S. Haldane, and Roger Penrose. It is clear from this work and other books of Schrodinger that he was one of the few physicists who deeply thought of the inner most secrets of life. This book is divided into two parts: What's Life (7 chapters) and Mind and Matter (6 chapters).

The physicist's most dreaded weapon, the mathematical deduction can not be used for life because it is too complex to be accessible to equations. The orderliness required for the preservation of life does not come by the random heat motions of atoms and molecules, but statistical averages that provide order. Schrodinger asks a simple question; why is life made of so many atoms and not just a few. He offers three examples; higher magnetic fields, increase in molecular population and the error introduced into a reaction rate constant or any other physical parameter would be far too great if only few molecules are involved to form life. Hence orderliness, and of course evolution and diversity of life, requires very large population of molecules.

The world is a construct of our sensations, perceptions, memories; all existing objectively and all scientific knowledge is based on sense of perception and nonetheless the scientific views of material processes formed in this way lack all sensual qualities and can not account for the latter. Theories that are developed from scientific observations of experiments never account for sensual qualities. The sentient, percipient and thinking ego does not figure anywhere in our world picture, because it is itself the world picture. It is identified with the whole and not part of it. The physical world lacks all the sensual qualities that go to make the subject of cognizance. It is colorless, soundless, and impalpable. The world is deprived of everything that makes sense in its in relation to the consciously contemplating, perceiving, and feeling the subject; no personal god can form part of world model that has only became accessible at the cost of removing everything personal from it. God is missing from spacetime picture like sense of perception or ones own personality. Upanisads (Hindu Scripture) states that Atman = Brahman, the personal self equal the all comprehending eternal self. Consciousness never experienced in plural only in the singular, and plurality is merely a series of different aspect of one soul and one conscious produced by a deception (Maya). There is no multiplicity of minds; in reality and truth there is only one mind.

Before and after is not a quality of the world we perceive but pertains to the perceiving mind and don't imply the notion of space and time. After relativity, the notion of before and after reside on the cause and effect relationship. The general directedness of all happenings is explained by the mechanical or statistical theory of heat. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that order changes to disorder but not disorder to order, and time travels in one direction from past to future, but not future to past. The statistical theory of time has a stronger bearing on the philosophy of time than theory of relativity. The latter presupposes unidirectional flow of time while statistical theory constructs from order of events.

My body functions according to laws of nature, but I direct body motions. The word "I" means to state that I who control the motion of the atoms and molecules according to the Laws of Nature. The uncertainty principle and the lack of causal connection in nature introduce certain features into physical reality. For example, we can not make any factual statement about a physical system without interacting with it which would change the physical state of the system. This explains why no complete description of any physical object is ever possible. These laws have pushed the boundary between the subject and object. In fact subject and object are only one, and no barrier exists. It is the same element that goes to compose my mind and the world. The situation is the same for every mind and its world, in spite of the unfathomable abundance of cross references between them. The world is given to me only once, not one existing and one perceived.

The last chapter gives brief autobiographical sketches of Schrodinger translated by his granddaughter. Schrödinger was deeply philosophical with strong family: He loved and respected his parents. His strong interest in physics and Vedanta philosophy (one of the six schools of Hindu Philosophy) is apparent, but he shy's away from writing about his complex personal life that involved many women and numerous extramarital affairs.

Small Book, Big Thoughts
By Mitch
This book sketches a connection between quantom theory and biology. It attempts to show how the quantum nature of things can result in a DNA molecule. I think it does a nice job and achieves its purpose.
The earlier reviewers make the book sound like it's almost beyond the comprehension of ordinary mortals. I'm an ordinary mortal and I felt like I got the big ideas with no trouble. If you're a philosopher or physicist, maybe you would appreciate whatever subtleties are here, but an ordinary, interested, technically-oriented layperson should not think that this book is inaccessible. This book is very accessible.
Four stars instead of five because I think Mr. Schrodinger waxes a bit too "intuitive" once he departs from the scientific approach to things.

Transforming Worldviews: An Anthropological Understanding of How People Change, by Paul G. Hiebert

In the past, changes in behavior and in belief have been leading indicators for missionaries that Christian conversion had occurred. But these aloneor even togetherare insufficient for a gospel understanding of conversion. For effective biblical mission, Paul G. Hiebert argues, we must add a third element: a change in worldview. Here he offers a comprehensive study of worldviewits philosophy, its history, its characteristics, and the means for understanding it. He then provides a detailed analysis of several worldviews that missionaries must engage today, addressing the impact of each on Christianity and mission. A biblical worldview is outlined for comparison. Finally, Hiebert argues for gospel ministry that seeks to transform people's worldviews and offers suggestions for how to do so.

From the Back Cover
"Transforming Worldviews is, in many respects, the capstone of Paul Hiebert's work. This book provides valuable insights for all people who engage in God's mission in the varied contexts of the world in this century. It is Hiebert at his best. A superb contribution to missiology. A lasting legacy!"--Tite Tiénou, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

"Transforming Worldviews is Hiebert at his best! For the first time, all of his major missiological insights--from set theory in church growth to the flaw of the excluded middle to critical contextualization--are integrated into a single volume. Transforming Worldviews, in which Hiebert wrestles with one of the most difficult concepts for us to understand and explain, is a fitting exclamation point to a career in which some of the most important evangelical missiological thinking of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries was done."--A. Scott Moreau, Wheaton College; editor, Evangelical Missions Quarterly

"Paul's wide-ranging scholarship, profound faith in Jesus Christ, deep insight, creative thinking, and wholehearted commitment to world evangelization are all evident here. Paul is a mentor, teacher, and guide to all of us involved in thinking about the mission of the church. This book is a wonderful example of his stimulating thought. Everyone interested in communicating the gospel among today's multiplicity of cultures will want to listen to what Paul Hiebert says in this book."--Charles Van Engen, Fuller Theological Seminary; founder and president of Latin American Christian Ministries

"The late Paul Hiebert's work on worldviews is mission anthropology at its best. This book is his final testimony to the centrality of worldview transformation at the heart of biblical conversion. It is an instant classic--clear, readable, useful, and compelling."--Dana L. Robert, Boston University School of Theology

"If you could pick one missiologist to sort out the tangled nest that surrounds the word/concept 'worldview,' it would be Paul Hiebert. In Transforming Worldviews, Hiebert does not disappoint. Once again he surveys the landscape majestically, explains clearly, and proposes wisely and faithfully."--Terry C. Muck, Asbury Theological Seminary

About the Author

A fantastic and important work
By Michael K. Severe
Transforming worldviews covers a full range of anthropological ideas and applies them to the concept of worldview. Scholarly in nature, its tone is readable and it applies important and diverse disciplines and concepts to thinking about worldview. This book is a major contribution. It is not just discussion of worldview but how worldviews are formed, how they may be critiqued and how they can be transformed. Very interesting discussions and applications of modernism, postmodernism, semiotics (sign theory), cultural analysis, and "glocalization." Plenty of illustrations and charts that assemble, systematize, illustrate and make understandable a vast array of information.

This book broke away from the typical simple and unhelpful discussions of worldview and places it within its scholarly debate and research. Hiebert deftly applies worldview to Christian missions and church work. He offers significant and helpful insights into ourselves and our culture as well as ways to engage and change.

Personally this work challenged my perceptions of worldview, knowledge and culture while introducing me to many new disciplines and concepts.

Easier Said than Done
By M. Edwards
Out of the 30 books I've read so far this year and the 6 or 7 of a theological/missiological nature, this is the meatiest of all (It's probably also one of the fattest at 333 pages). I would highly recommend it not just for Christian international workers, but especially for North American pastors and Christian workers as well, as all too often we are completely blind to the assumptions that lie behind our worldviews as they persist unchallenged in our host cultures.

Beginning with the concept and characteristics of worldviews, the late Dr. Hiebert then moves on to discuss worldviews of small-scale oral societies, peasant societies, modern and postmodern worldviews, and finally, the "glocal" worldview. He then sums up by discussing what a biblical worldview is and how worldviews are transformed.

I found Hiebert's treatment of what he calls "critical realism" (as opposed to positivism and instrumentalism) to be one of many nuggets in the book. Simply put, there must be a great measure of correspondence between the world outside and the worlds we construct inside for us to survive in the world. Human knowledge does not consist of photographs of reality (as positivism suggests) or of collages (as instrumentalism affirms) but of montages and maps that can be tested to determine their truthfulness.
The pictures on pages 318-319 vividly illustrate how different configurations can be imposed on the raw data of our experiences and how people grow in their perception of worldview. The short discussion in the last chapter on people movements and "muliti-individual" conversions was also something I can continue to keep in my mind in my ministry context here.

I am reminded that our role as agents of change is "neither that of the conservative nor that of the anarchist" but that of a subversive agent - to seek to transform worldview gradually from within and to bring people back under the allegiance of the true Lord (p. 322). One way to transform worldviews in the resistant rural society where I am presently living (which reflects aspects of all of the worldviews listed above) might be in focusing to bring change to the families of foreign brides, to help them find stability as entire families are discipled in Jesus Christ.

Certain parts of this book were a little tedious to wade through, and large sections dealing with modernity and postmodernity were expanded treatments of what I learned before from other books and from Hiebert's fellow Trinity professor Tite Tienou 20 years ago when he was at Alliance Theological Seminary. Nevertheless, as I fan through the pages of the book again now I see I underlined multiple sentences on almost every page. Although it will take some time for you to get through, this book will definitely challenge you to think!

Once curiosity that caught my attention is that apparently neither in the chapter about the biblical worldview, nor anywhere else, does Hiebert seem to address the topic of hell. This may be because he prefers to talk in relational and fuzzy categories rather than intrinsic and digital sets (read the book if you do not understand what these terms mean) and in turning away from idols and turning always each day toward the Lord (e.g. "does Jesus remain the ultimate reference point in our understanding of the kingdom? p. 279). Nevertheless, I found the apparent absence of any reference to hell a bit curious.

My only other complaint is that this book does not really talk about how to transform worldviews, as the topic suggested. This is not a how-to book. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the process was that easy?

Important tool for understanding our own and other worldviews
By Tim Lubinus
Transforming Worldviews is a must read for anyone working or living cross-culturally. Worldview analysis is necessary for understanding and communicating in a new culture. This understanding only comes with careful analysis and reflection, not just more time spent overseas. It is possible to have vast experience living cross-culturally, but still have little understanding of the underlying worldview of that culture.

The first step is to acknowledge how our own worldview (fundamental cognitive, affective, and evaluative presuppositions a group of people make about the nature of things, and which they use to order their lives) interprets and distorts our understanding of other worldviews. It is as if we have a set of glasses permanently affixed to our face through which we interpret all the data that we observe. Because of this, we can not be a neutral observer of other cultures and their worldview.

In Transforming Worldviews, Hiebert helps readers to understand the concept, function, and characteristics of worldviews while coloring his explanations with examples of people interpreting the same data differently because of their worldview discrepancies. When communicating cross-culturally, we need to understand these differences, or we may find that though we have given information clearly based on our worldview, the listener's world view causes him to get a different understanding than we may intend. With fundamental differences in the understanding of creation, time, history, purpose, cause and effect, etc. it is very difficult to get a clear understanding about beliefs and behavior. At times missionaries have focused on transforming a person's beliefs and behavior and later found that, if the worldview is not also transformed, instead of embracing biblical faith, he may have only altered behavior and added Jesus to a list of gods.

After Hiebert gives an explanation of some methods of analyzing worldviews, he explores small-scale oral societies, peasant world views, the modern worldview, the worldview of late modernity (or post-modernity) and post-postmodern or Global Worldview. These chapters are outstanding and valuable for anyone working to understand their own worldview, divergent worldviews in your own culture, or who want to work cross-culturally.

Finally Hiebert described and analyzed a biblical worldview and gave steps to help people as they are transformed in their worldview, beliefs, and actions by their encounter with Jesus Christ. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to use worldview analysis in order to better understand how people think and process information in order to communicate more clearly and accurately.
