About the Author
Paul V. Azzopardi trained and worked as a certified public accountant and then obtained an MBA from the University of British Columbia, now Sauder School of Business, concentrating in finance and investments. Paul worked in the securities industry for the last twenty years in various roles but principally as a manager of private client accounts. In this role he invested in securities around the world on behalf of his private clients. He now concentrates on managing a private fund and on his lifelong passion of writing about investments and finance. His blog can be found at www.etfinvestmentsnewsletter.com. Paul's first book, "Investment and Finance: A Common Sense Approach", an investment primer, was published in 2004 by Progress Press. a world of jargon

With all due respect, especially given the favorable reviews by others, I was disappointed in the book. My comments here about it are not intended to denigrate the author, whom I tend to admire, but rather to give the prospective reader an alternative viewpoint.

I was expecting to learn an approach to the problem of to buy or not to buy a given security on the basis of interpreting market trends from a behavioral perspective. The author introduces the reader to numerous behavioral concepts and discusses how they can potentially influence what happens in the stock market, but the illustrations are always retrospective and nothing is done to generate a predictive model. I suppose one could use criteria of the technical approach for deciding if and when to buy or sell, and then use the catchwords in Azzopardi's book to explain the behavior behind the technical decision, but that by itself would make such an exercise rationalization rather than a predictive analysis.

Perhaps, after a while, a lot of this rationalization could be reviewed and a behavioristic analytic could be developed from it to make predictions or assertions above and beyond what the technical people do, but that would likely be a clumsy way to develop a behavioral approach. As it is, Azzopardi pretty much talks about the potential of using behavioral concepts to figure out when to buy or when to sell, but he leaves it for others to pioneer the actual approach.

If you know very little about buying and selling stocks and need a primer, this book would give you an interesting set of considerations. If, on the other hand, you have had your share of accidents in the rough and tumble of the stock market and are groping around for a new perspective, I believe that you would be frustrated if you sat down and pored over this tome.

An Excellent Primer on Behaviorial Finance

There are number of good books on behaviorial finance/economics but this is the first book I've come across that pulls all of the key themes together in a straightforward, comprehensible manner and then effectively bridges over to how it relates to technical analysis. For my 'fundamental' colleaugues who ask me 'how do I learn about technical analysis?" I always say "you need to study behaviorial finance first" but the problem has been that there are perhaps a half dozen books that I reccomend. Now there is one book that pulls it all together that's written by a trader, not an academic or a strategist. Believe me, there is a difference. Even if you have a working understanding of BF, I would still recommend the book because of this distinction.

Behavioural Technical Analysis

I have been somewhat hesitant to write a review since all the technical jargon and rationalization has already been documented in reviews written by others. As a result I thought my review would be just a repeat therefore I will provide my input from a different direction.

I agree with all the reviews that Paul V. Azzopardi knows what he is talking about sine he is a trader and not a bystander giving his observation. Finally someone who has hands on experience is sharing his knowledge in a clear and appealing manner which kept me interested.

As I read the book it was almost as if the author knew what mistakes I made in the past or the lessons I had to learn the hard way. It is easier to accept what you did wrong from a book rather than have someone tell you directly. Your ego does not get in the way. It gave me time to absorb the information and see where I went wrong and how I could have avoided those obvious pitfalls. It was an insight to my trading habits.

I guess to sum up and not be redundant it is difficult to clearly to explain how enlightened / informed I feel after reading this book . Behavioural Technical Analysis is not one of those books you read just once but is valuable as an ongoing reference. Trading without having read this book is like "going to a gunfight with a knife" in my view.

There are some of good books on behavioural finance but this is the only book which captures all the key elements and for this reason it would be my recommendation for anyone in this field whether you are just starting out or experienced.

Good principles to apply

Each chapter is just a page or two which makes it an easy read. It's filled with a lot of common sense advise that people SHOULD know but don't. I like to read a chapter a day on my way to work and put it into practice that day. It produced good results in my team. I don't think it was meant to be read in one sitting. What's the point of learning if you don't apply?

"Mock people who do not have a system." Engaging and Helpful Advice for Designers (Especially Print Designers)

Drew is Proprietor of Nancy Victor Gallery and Director of Navig8 Ltd. His focus in this book is on working with clients to create high end print materials, however there is much for any designer to glean from his discussion of process. The book is delightfully written, with such advice as:

"Always name your files properly and consistently.
Use an intuitive folder structure.
Test your system; if a complete stranger was to open your job folder, would they know which was the most up-to-date version?
Mock people who do not have a system."

Of interest to all designers (especially those who work with clients) are his chapters on creative process, working with clients, conceptual sketching, color, and typography. Of special interest to designers who work in print are chapters on paper, the printing process, and binding.

I love this book!

This book has a lot of useful information and it is so easy to read. I feel like he is talking one on one with you. He tells you obvious things that you would have never thought about. The book is well made and every page is bursting with information to help you with your graphic design career. I recommend this book to anyone in the graphic design field.

A Good Survey of Graphic Design Concepts

I was not as impressed with this version of Know Your Onions as I was with the web design version. De Soto's text is very engaging, but seems to meander through graphic design concepts, highlighting some and truncating others. For general graphic design concepts, it is perhaps a good book, but it might be tough for a novice designer to understand.

What was he thinking

I loved Danni. She was a funny, quirky and relatable. The fact that the book was set in England was great. I did not get some of the references but it did not drag me from the story. Breaking out of your comfort zone to reach for the dream of having it all is a great storyline.

The story itself reads like a memoir with dialog. Showing only Danni's point of view. Which was really good because it distracted you that she was having an affair with a married man. I was glad that she was conflicted about the whole thing and that she could not help falling in love with him because their love was too great. Sleeping is the wife's bed I did not enjoy.

In some places, I was saying, "what was he thinking" so it would have been nice to know what Oliver's deal was. I found it difficult to justify a man cheating on his wife. If he was that unhappy leave, don't stay until something better comes around. It made me not like him as much as I should.

I really liked when she left with Rod. It was relatable, a quick hot fling with a handsome ski instructor, no better way to get over a boring life.
It also served as the rebound to clear way to find her true love in Oliver.

Oliver and Danni had real chemistry it was easy to see way they were drawn together. The ups and down of their relationship made for a real roller coaster ride.

The additional storyline of the best friend dying added an emotional pull to the book as a whole and pulled it all together nicely.

A Mature Romance with Emotional Depth

Danni Lewis has always taken the safe path in life and love. But a devastating loss forces her to reevaluate everything. On a whim, she heads to France looking for change and leaves behind her safety net to take a chance.

Once she's there she meets Olivier du Pape and throws caution to the wind, falling for a married man--something she swore she would never do. But love isn't always what you expect it to be? Still, does this love stand a chance?

At first, I was a bit bored with Danni. I wanted to yell at her to take a chance and do something. But then her world was rocked by loss, and Danni took charge. The story took off then, too, because the author did an amazing job of crafting a heartbreaking situation that led this main character to a heart-filled love story. Plus, there's something so endearing about Danni; she battles her conscience and struggles with right and wrong instead of just feeling something and going for it.

Weak at the Knees is a mature romance with emotional depth. As much as I wanted to see Danni in love, I wanted more to see her grow as a person and believe in her instincts. I cared about her, and that is the hallmark of a good read in my humble opinion.

Take a chance on Weak at the Knees, and don't give up early on. Danni, and the story, really grow on you.

Twenty-six year old Danni Lewis needs to make a change in her life. For the past eleven years she has been in a safe on again / off again relationship with her boyfriend Hugo. When her childhood best friend Amber suddenly dies, she takes to heart Amber's dying words to "seize the day" and go out into the world and discover herself, so she leaves London for a ski resort in the French Alps in search of a new beginning. Danni tries to move forward in her new life while trying to put her past behind her, and falls hard for married ski instructor Olivier du Pape, something that she swore she would never do. Danni battles with her conscience and struggles over whether to give in to the forbidden love and follow her heart's desire. Love is a funny emotion, and the heart has an unexpected way of changing people's minds and choices.

Weak At The Knees is an emotional story of a young woman's journey of self-discovery and coming of age. Author Jo Kessel weaves an intriguing story set in London and the French Alps, and told in the first person narrative about love, loss and relationships. The reader follows Danni on her personal journey of self-discovery; moving out of her comfort zone, making changes, and taking control of her life; and finding true love. I loved that the author allows the reader to get into Danni's head and discover who she is and what makes her tick: her inner demons, hopes, dreams, fears, and feelings about of love and loss. While Danni and Olivier's relationship is central to the storyline, the beauty of the story is watching Danni come into her own and discover the life that she wants to live.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the richly detailed descriptive settings of London and the French Alps. The author transports the reader to these wonderful locations with her vivid portrait of the culture and scenery that makes you want to travel to see the historic landmarks of London and the romantic snow capped mountains and villages of the French Alps.

Weak At The Knees is an emotionally intense story that deals with real life issues like chasing dreams, love, loss, relationships, adultery, and finding your true self that will leave you "weak at the knees."

Frances Ridley Havergal’s formal education ended when she was seventeen, with one term at a young women’s school in Dusseldorf, Germany, yet she was a true scholar all her life. Fluent in German and French and nearly so in Italian, she read and loved the Reformers in Latin, German, and French. Knowledge was never an end in itself, only a means to know better her Lord and Saviour and to help to bring others to know Him. The Bible was her only Book, and she studied deeply the Hebrew and Greek texts of Scripture, memorized nearly all the New Testament and large portions of the Old Testament, and loved the Author with all her being. Frances was brought to a saving knowledge of Christ when she was fourteen, and the rest of her life was consecrated to her Savior, the Lord Jesus. Keenly aware of her own sinfulness and inability, her sole desire was to please and glorify Him alone. Royal Indeed

I am a believer who first became acquainted with the life and works of Frances Ridley Havergal in 1995. I found a number of her nearly extant works in a used bookstore where I first obtained some of her original small books including the five Royal books. I have learned a lot from the pen of Frances Ridley Havergal. She was a poet and hymnwriter who lived in England in the 1800's and was to England what Fanny Crosby was to America. This was the very first book I read that Frances wrote and of course, I wanted to find more of her works. I am glad someone has labored long and hard to bring back the valuable works of FRH so people today can benefit from them. This book is very beautifully formatted and rich in content. In my opinion the people who are doing this have done a first-rate job on the five Royal books! I heartily recommend the life and works of Frances Ridley Havergal. I think she is the only woman in Christian history who has such a wide body of work and am thrilled to see her original works come back into print.

A very specific guide on Hypnosis.

This is not the first book I read about hypnosis. I have read some on the material and I haven't really been able to make it work that much. However, this book makes it easier to understand, to practice and to help me use it. I understand now a lot more on how to use it to accomplish the things I want in life. It is also very specific on the terms I use now. I recommend it. I bought this guide on a discounted price.

Mesmerizing!

Mesmerizing! That is how I would describe this book. I like how this book was able to talk about the history of hypnotism. The ancient ways as usual has given me quite a chill. This book also contains some stories on how hypnotism had been used to treat people, especially those who had been in trauma. This book not only discussed about the benefits of hypnotism, but it also mentioned about the bad effect of hypnotism if done incorrectly. The case of Candace Newmaker is an example of this incorrect practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in hypnotism. But for myself I will not try the self-hypnosis even if the book had given the proper procedures. It’s enough for me to read about it.

Interesting but hard to understand in parts

The book was very concise and to the point. I like the beginning where they tell you about the history of hypnotism. It lets you know how it all began and got to where it is today. Also telling you about certain life problems and mental conditions that specific types of hypnotism can help was very interesting and informative. When it got to the part describing how to do self hypnotism and describing NLP I feel that they were too technical in the descriptions of them. If you are a typical lay person the terminology they used could be very confusing. Putting it in simpler terms that anyone can understand would have made it a much better read. All in all it was very interesting and informative.

Action-packed shorts; a fun read!

Very cool collection of shorts, all featuring a strong central female character, sometimes the protagonist, sometimes the antagonist. This is a mixed bag in terms of genre: sci-fi, horror, supernatural, noir, assassins -- all of my favorite types of stories actually. Besides the "tough girl," all stories shared the binding element of being action-packed page-turners. The story-telling is taut and the length of each entry just right. This author definitely knows how to write action.

I read almost all of the stories back-to-back. It was difficult to put down. Highly recommend.

Tough Girls is a whirlwind of tales full of nonstop action with plenty of violence and steamy sex for good measure. R P Bonasso is a master storyteller of today's post-modern age. His knowledge of technology and war making are unsurpassed. His sci-fi and horror creatures are powerful and amazingly realistic. But the real winners are his powerful heroines. They are all women you’d welcome into the driver’s seat.
