Oscar Riera Ojeda is an editor and designer who practices in the United States, South America, and Europe from his office in Boston. he is vice-director of the Spanish-Argentinian magazine Casa Internacional and is the creator of several series of architecture publications for Rockport Publishers, including Contemporary World Architects, Ten Houses, Single Building, and Art and Architecture. I actually have worked for Peter Forbes as a freelance architectural photographer. And yes, some of his projects in this excellent book are displayed via my photographs. If I wanted a house done, I would definitely talk to Peter.

First class all the way

This is a terrific book with terrific material to present. It is part of a wonderful series. The organization, text, photos, and drawings are all excellent. More authors/publishers should learn to present architecture this well. It's a book I study often for inspiration as Forbes' work is very elegant and spare: qualities more architects should aspire to incorporate into their work, rather than the stylistic faddish gestures all too common today. This is a favorite book in my library.

excellent for students and practicing architects

This is perhaps the best value in pictorial architecture books. For under $20., this book has great photos, straightforeward text, clearly reproduced drawings (including construction details!!), all superbly graphically designed. Even if the architecture doesn't appeal to you, the overall presentation of it in this book will. If you do like the architecture (which I think is a beautiful modern adaption of conventional New England vernacular), then this book is a must-have. You won't find this quality in books two or three times the cost!!

If it's true that learning is invisible, where does that leave Assessment for Learning, lesson observation and the whole concept of 'outstanding' teaching?Didau suggests an alternative to the quick fix culture so prevalent in schools: making learning deliberately difficult. He considers the perceptual and cognitive illusions that keep us in the dark. And presents an alternative understanding of learning and progress. He also introduces the science of how people really learn and suggests ways to implement this approach in schools. And examines the consequences of shifting our understanding of how learning occurs and discusses some of the mistakes we've made about marking, differentiation, motivation and creativity.

There is a canon of about a dozen books that I recommend to teachers - most of which are cited in this one. Hey educator/parent/ed policymaker: Going to read one education book this year? Make it this one.

At this point of my life, I've read a LOT of books about education: ed policy, ed theory, ed history, ed practice, ed this, ed that, ed cetera. I can't say, though, that I've read any quite like David Didau's here, mainly because I haven't encountered anything that so effortlessly and thoughtfully mashes up all the standard ed book types. On one hand it's a useful research work, challenging some long-accepted practical truisms to explain and demonstrate how cognitive scientific findings can enhance classroom practice. On another, it's a note of affirmation from a colleague in education's trenches. On still another--well, that'd be three hands, and two is quite enough. You get the idea.

In short this book taught me a lot, made me argue with it occasionally, and presented information I'd previously been familiar with in fresh, exceedingly clever ways. If you love reading about education and are passionate to learn more about what can work and why, I can't recommend many single titles more highly than this one.

One of the best books on education I've read!

This is one of the better books on education and learning I've read. And I've read quite a few. It does a splendid job of pulling together a lot of research and applying it to the task of education, without being prescriptive or idealogical. It is a long book, and the first section about our various biases was a load to plow through. The book moves much quicker after that first section though. Well worth the effort!

The Confidence Code

I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. Let's do whatever is necessary to keep our females acting this truth. This book is a great beginning! Jo Seier-Doofe

It's not a total waste, but not very helpful

I'm suspicious of some of the five star reviews of this book. If you check out their total reviews, for many this is their only review, and for others, they have just 2 or 3 reviews, all 5 star. And they gush a bit too much about this book. I'm having difficulty getting through this book because it's boring. It's mainly stories about wealthy, highly educated women, or celebrities, who expressed at some point that they felt lucky or unworthy, etc. There are other things in the book, and it is enlightening in some respects. But it's not geared toward helpful advice for the average woman. I agree with the several other reviews for this book that say much the same thing as I am saying. It's not a total waste of money, and if the stats apply to you, you may find it more applicable to yourself.

I did find one thing in the book that I am using, which is that women apologize all the time, whether it's justified or not. I've noticed that I do the same, so am trying to alter this. The response has not been great. The problem is, and perhaps the reason why, women appear to lack confidence and apologize, is because the response when they don't do that is not good. The goal is to get certain things, whether it's a job or a raise or congeniality in the office. I believe that women have learned how to win the end game through experience, and that experience has shown that the best way to do this is to APPEAR more subserviant and pleasant than you are. I saw a documentary once about how girl toddlers & boy toddlers are treated differently, and wondered why girls cry more than boys. You could see in the test that when girl toddlers cried in a child pen area, they got picked up more often than the boys did when they cried. So the girls learned that to cry is to get the result desired, and boys learned that crying did them no good. So the accomplished women in this book, for all their assertions that they attribute their success to luck or whatever, actually did achieve what they wanted, using precisely the things that this book is saying not to use.

Maybe the book changes a bit in the second half. If so, I'll update this review. Don't get me wrong...it's interesting. Just not a practical guide for the average American woman.

Zen and the art of confidence

My curiosity was piqued immediately. Do I focus on competence over confidence? And what really is confidence anyway. In "The Confidence Code," written with great insight, openness and a thoughtful and measured approach, the authors demystify the value of confidence in the marketplace and in everyday life and why it is some of us have it and some us don't. Mixing the right levels of science, intrigue, example, humor and humility--they even go as far as personal genetic testing to see how they fare on the confidence scale--the reader has all the available wisdom to "crack" the confidence code and better understand its impact on just about everything we do. Personally, I found myself listening to conversations in a different way--did a woman at my table just say "he was acting just like a woman and apologizing for everything all the time" --and thinking about my own effectiveness at work and with people in general. It was surprising. This is definately a book that will be greatly talked about, learned from and enjoyed. I highly recommend it!
