About the Author
Will Eisner's career spanned the entire history of comic books, from his formative days in the 1930s through the 1940s, when he revolutionized narrative sequential art with his internationally famed weekly newspaper supplement series THE SPIRIT, to the 1970s, when he created the contemporary graphic novel form. In addition to his award-winning graphic novels, he is also the author of the influential study Comics and Sequential Art. Eisner passed away on January 3, 2005 at the age of 87.

well this is a great jumping on point for you

If you are not already a fan of The Spirit, well this is a great jumping on point for you! If you are already a fan, such as I, this is a fabulous group of stories to just sit back and relax with! Will Eisner was one of the immortal graphic artists to walk the earth, with a different kind of story telling that has really never been matched in our time. Perhaps though, one of the most interesting stories in this collection is not Eisner scripted nor drawn, but is Darwyn Cooks match up of The Spirit with another great crime stopper, Batman. You will not be able to sit this one down, and you will be glad to add it to your collection. Beautiful selection of stories and artwork from both Eisner and some of the great talent that exists amongst us today! You won't be sorry!

A retrospective done right!

This is really well produced volume in celebration of the Spirit by Will Eisner. In an edition that looks great next to the Spirit Archive Editions, DC offers us clear, colorful, easy to read and see reproductions of the strip/comic's original newspaper run, as well as a 1970's story from Kitchen Sink and DC's #1 issue of the Batman/Spirit with Darwyn Cooke doing the rendering. This book is a colorful, fun, celebration of this well-loved creation. Great job DC! Highly recommended.

how I became a poet

No book could be closer to my heart. I grew up in the Appalachian mountains in N.C. One winter when I was 15, my father had left my mother and me while he got winter work in Florida. Mother and I were snowed in up on our mountain for a month (Neither of us could drive then). We spent a lot of time huddled around the only source of heat, a small oil stove in my Mother's room.
During those days, I think I read every poem in Utermeyer's book aloud to her. (Some of them over and over.) The more I read, the more she rewarded me in small ways. I thought I was reading for her, but I was really reading for me. I was fifty before my need to write poetry kicked in, but I know that is where it started. I now have a M.A. in English Lit. and am honored to be the Poet Laureate of North West Florida. My respect for Utermeyer's selections has never wavered. The first year I was married, my Mother and my husband each gave me a copy for Christmas. I still love the old tattered one. Fabulous!!! I just bought a copy from Amazon to give to a fellow poet. Amazing bargin!!

No question: the best poetry anthology ever printed... incredible volume of beautiful poems through the first half of the 20th Century. Good condition used copies available cheap: -what more can be said? I highly recommend it.

What do you call a man who does not sleep but maybe three hours a night waiting by the phone for orders or instructions for twelve years on end? Shall I tell those who ask that the work almost killed me several times over? Shall I tell them that I was indeed a slave who lost his wife because of years of neglecting her and who did not get to see his own children grow up?

Shall I tell them of the deceit, lies, and backstabbing which were the normal part of my everyday existence. Shall I tell them that maybe only one out of ten thousand men could have done my job because of the miracles that they expected me to perform?

No slaves indeed!

Incredible Life

This story amazed and replused me! I loved it! It was amazing how the authors were able to live through terrible situations in which they were at the beck and call of such selfish egomaniacs. Awful! I loved and was fascinated by how the co-author was able to find the means and the wherewithal to escape by a hair's breadth. Didn't want to put it down! I had to know what he (you'll know who he is if you read the book) would do next to appease the wrath of the gods! And these were actual personas, not fictional.

I highly recommend this book if you like to see what it would be like to work for a royal family. It'll blow you away.

"The Other Half"

I remember when, before I was hired to work for the Royal Family, Owen told me "Mario, you're not going to believe how the other half lives." Money was not a consideration in that society unless you didn't have it and would employ any means to attain it. I was just a "worker bee" on the fringe, but I still saw the mind-set of those involved in this way of life. The book brought to light even more of the inner workings of one of the last Royal Families. I enjoyed it and can't wait for book two.

This is a nice compendium of hypnosis induction scripts. They are well written and perfect for hypnosis, there are no "loop holes" that the brain may take when not enough is said or it isn't said properly. There's a very good variety and a different selection of scripts. Good variety for a variety of people, as not every style is ideal for everyone. For instance, since I am a bad visualizer and can't relax easily, so there are many kinds of inductions that just don't work for me. Those type of inductions are what you find in most other hypnosis books which is terribly frustrating for me. But there are many options for me in this book! At the beginning of each section is advantages and disadvantages of each style of induction, as well as uses and the basic principle of said style. This makes it much easier to select a script that the one being hypnotized will work best with.

The writing is nice, but there's this weird table thing used for the actual scripts, which is a bit annoying (though makes the organization nice) but makes it impossible to use from a phone. I have to use this on my ipad or laptop, my iphone is a no-go. The table gives the scripts with headers to break down each section and tells which goal (technique) each paragraph of the induction is aiming for. This can help you tailor your own scripts as well as solidify your intentions for a more effective hypnosis. It is still a pain to read from the table, however. The scripts also detonate pauses with ellipses. And while that what the symbol is used for, with all the table lines and dot dot dots it is rather cluttered, visually.

A great part about this book is you can just go to a script and start reading if you already know the basics, which I can give you right now: Talk monotonously, pause often for words to set in (signified by ellipses or "..."), and maintain a very composed and relaxed confidence. Make sure all physical matters are handled before-hand (drinks, restroom, seated comfortably, silenced electronics, invest your time, ect...) and you can go! Patience is key for both the reader and the relaxer for hypnosis. You can't expect professional quality results without dedicating some real time and learning more about it, but you can have some fun with those you trust and who trust you.

Cons: Layout of actual scripts is cluttered, can't be read easily from phone.

A complete guide. A ride through the Graphic Novel concept and everything you need to know to meet face to face with every detail, including reading recommendation for every genre.

A must have for any creator or fan, and one of the few written recently specially devoted to the Graphic Novel

How It's Done

What does it really take to create a good graphic novel? "Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel," by comic guru Mike Chinn, seems to have the answer. Using his own expertise and various comic books as examples, Chinn describes how to approach different genres, how to conduct research for your idea, how to put the idea in a script, how to use drawings and panels, and how to get your work published. While there are certain rules to follow (like drawing 5-7 panels on each page), Chinn understands that every writer/artist needs a little leeway. Just don't expect him to hold your hand through the whole thing. At least there's something for Amazon reviewers who get so wound up over what a graphic novel should be.

This book is unrated, but contains no offensive content.

Good Solid book

This book in not bad. It has a solid well written structure to it. The chapters are sequentialy based. But; you can dive into ANY chapter at a moments notice and glean LOTS of information.

American readers might get lost with British language & grammar but that is minor.

The ONLY drawback is the section on computer graphics. Its obvious this book was written about 4 years ago so the technology HAS changed.

Can't wait to read his NEW book on making comics digitally!!!
